How to be a successful manager
Whether you’re moving into your first management role or have years of experience managing a team, it’s important to remember that you are always learning and developing your own skills as well as ensuring your team members grow too. Here at the Centre, we recognise that each level of management requires relevant training, which is why we offer three training courses that are endorsed and certificated by the Institute of Leadership and Management.
- Moving into management, for first people in their first management role
- Moving up in management, for experienced managers who want to deepen their skills
- Moving from manager to leader, for new and aspiring senior managers
All of these courses have been endorsed by the Institute of Leadership and Management and successful students will receive a certificate from the ILM on passing the course. Anyone who would like to register for the ILM accredited version of these courses simply needs to specify this when placing their booking (additional fees apply). Once registered, each student is entitled to a student membership of the ILM, which allows them to take advantage of a number of learning tools.
Management top tips
Whatever your level, remember our top twelve tips on how to be a successful manager:
- Learn how to listen. Genuine two-way communication is vital.
- Recognise stress in yourself and others: too much can lead to burn-out.
- Manage your time. It’s a finite resource. Analyse how you spend it.
- Get organised. Get on top of the paperwork and the information-overload.
- Leave work at work. Your brief case is not a home for lost documents.
- Learn to delegate. But don’t ‘dump’ or abdicate.
- If in doubt, ask. You can’t know everything. People want you to succeed.
- If in doubt (2), sleep on it. Instant decisions are sometimes rash.
- Say thank you. Give positive strokes. Praise in public, criticise in private.
- Never stop planning. It’s your job to think ahead.
- Learn from your mistakes. Celebrate success and learn from failure - ‘A person who never made a mistake never made anything’.
- Be true to yourself.
