National Volunteers’ Week - Get involved

National Volunteers' Week is approaching, and is an excellent opportunity for you to do that bit of volunteering you just never quite got around to.

Good for your soul (and your CV)

It can seem almost impossible to find the time for volunteering in between work, childcare or studying - or in some cases even all three! But volunteering isn't just about helping the community, it can also be a great way to build new skills and improve your CV. So can you afford not to find the time?

Choose something that interests you!

Obviously, you need to find the right volunteering opportunity for you. This can seem daunting, but it's just about looking at your strengths and interests. I know a few people who love a bit of vintage shopping so volunteer in local charity shops in their spare time: not only do you get to help the charity raise some money, you might also get first pick of any fabulous outfits that come in - although you will still have to pay for them!

If you're politically-minded, there are always lots of local grass roots campaigns that need helping hands. Whether it's designing flyers, administering a mailing list or just acting as a steward at a protest march, you get a chance to practice some really valuable skills. The trick here is to work with a cause you really do care about, though - no campaign wants a half-hearted helper who's only there to build their CV!

One thing to bear in mind with anything political, however, is how this might look to future employers. For instance, when applying for a job with one of the big banks it might be best not to mention your social media work for Occupy London! Getting some advice on how to tailor your CV depending on the vacancy will be invaluable here.

On a slightly safer note, local events are also great for volunteering opportunities - and they can be a lot of fun. I'm planning to help out at the Streatham Food Festival this summer as it'll be a fantastic way to meet people and sample the local restaurants. With any luck the sun will even shine (top tip: if volunteering at an outdoor event, don't forget your sunscreen)!

Go for it

You'll find it much easier to spare some time for volunteering if you opt for something you're really interested in. Even if it's just a few hours on a Saturday afternoon you can really make a difference. And don't forget, especially for those wanting to work in the charity sector, volunteering can be a great way to build connections.

According to a recent survey by the NUS, nearly a third of students volunteer while attending university, most of whom are thinking firmly of future career options and CV building. Getting involved with your Student Union is a really great way to do this, with a multitude of societies and social activities available.

So this National Volunteers' Week, why not get involved? With a great list of events, there's bound to be something that would suit you!
