Restructures: managing a restructure
Course summary
This intensive, one day course will equip managers with the tools they need when taking their team or department through the painful process of restructure. We cover the whole process from designing the restructure, through the proper consultation stages and looking at redundancy and how to manage the emotional turmoil involved in many restructures. You will come away with several ‘how to’ guides to help you in this difficult process.
Course outline
Restructures and reorganisations are now part of daily life. They are painful for staff and for managers and can lead to difficult decisions in terms of redundancies and job losses. This intensive course will give you both the legal framework you need and an understanding of the emotional context for managing change. We will look at the policies and processes you need in place at the start, the need for consultation throughout the process and how to do this well and the whole area of managing staff feelings during and coming out of the restructure.This demanding one-day course covers:
- why restructures happen and how this affects the new structure
- identifying what structure you need and why
- securing stakeholder agreement in the lead-up to the restructure
- consulting with staff - before and after the formal decision
- the legal rights of employers and employees in a restructure situation
- a step by step guide to the consultation process
- how to handle bad news
- job design: practice in redesigning teams and functions
- rules and guidelines for drawing up job descriptions
- redundancy - rights and duties; dos and don'ts for handling redundancy
- supporting your team through the emotional upheaval of change
This course is co-trained by two trainers: Jan Burnell and John Burnell.
Jan Burnell is the Centre's founder and Managing Director. She is the Centre's lead consultant for management training and specialises in courses which help people at all levels in organisations to communicate and work together effectively. She has led three major restructures and has been in leadership positions in organisations in all sectors for the past three decades.
John Burnell is a senior Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, and has worked for nearly all his life in the HR field. He was head of employee relations for the London Borough of Waltham Forest, and Director of Personnel at both Metropolitan and Notting Hill Housing Groups. In all these senior positions, he was closely involved in staff development at times of major change.

This course takes place at the Centre's Central London training suite with easy access to tube and mainline rail stations.

This course is for any manager involved in managing staff through the process of restructure. The Centre works with people from all sectors including the public sector, voluntary sector, corporate sector and private sector.
