Course summary

This two day course looks at every aspect of managing a sizeable project, allowing delegates to work on a case study of their own, to learn and apply the many tools and techniques involved. The course is aimed at those with some experience of project management, who are becoming involved in running, commissioning or contracting substantial or complex projects and want to develop their skills to a higher level and understand more about the disciplines of project management.

Course outline

Over the two days you will cover:

  • Producing project terms of reference – how to define aims and objectives, the project environment and success criteria
  • Defining key project stages and the project life cycle
  • Using a variety of tools to produce a work breakdown structure for a project
  • Estimating finance and resource requirements using a range of estimating techniques
  • Managing risks using a range of risk management strategies
  • Responding effectively to changes that arise during the project lifecycle
  • Leading and managing the project team
  • Identifying and working effectively with stakeholders
  • Monitoring and evaluating projects effectively

The course comprises presentations and experiential workshops. There is a mixture of individual work and small group work, as well as plenary discussion and the opportunity to work with some practical project management tools and techniques.

Who is this course for?

All participants must have considerable hands on experience of managing projects. Attendees may find it useful to have attended the introductory course on Project Management, although this is not essential. The Centre works with people from all sectors including the public sector, voluntary sector, corporate sector and private sector.
