Norma Johnston

History and experience

Norma’s main focus is how strong, strategic thinking in management and communications best support each other. From coaching CEOs to drive corporate communications through to supporting managers in the midst of a restructure, Norma’s experience of engaging audiences is central to her work.

Her work spans leadership and consultancy roles with international organisations such as the World Health Organization and Plan and Amnesty UK. Her corporate clients have been in the fields of IT software and life sciences and in the public sector district councils and housing associations. The scope of her work means that Norma is adept at strategy development, business planning and facilitation with both internal and external stakeholders. She is accustomed to creating sound communication strategy that underpins an organisation’s vision and mission and as an experienced media spokesperson she understands the need for focussed and engaging messages.

Norma’s career has included global communications director for Plan, communications director for Amnesty UK and campaigns advisor for the WHO’s Roll Back Malaria initiative. Her consultancy work means that she understands the particular challenges facing smaller businesses and charities and the demands placed upon their communications professionals.

Norma holds the Diploma of Public Relations from the Chartered Institute of Public Relations. She is the author of the Roll Back Malaria Advocacy Guide.

Training style

A dynamic and lively communicator, Norma brings theory to life and uses real life situations as the basis for discussion with delegates. This interactive approach works well with each delegate (and the trainer!) gaining new insight as to how issues have been addressed by other managers. Problem solving and lessons from past experiences in the room are an integral part of each course.
