Risk management at the Centre - a revolutionary approach

The problem with “risk management” is that it tends to get a universally bad press – it can be stultifyingly boring and we only hear about it when it goes wrong!  Many managers will only deal with risk whilst holding their noses.

But the Centre’s new course could change all that for you and, whilst we can't guarantee to make risk management fun, we do promise a lively, interactive learning and development experience that will encourage you to see risk in new ways and to become a change-maker within your organisation.

And, we think we are with the zeitgeist.  A recent scan of the media showed a number of articles dealing with new methods of understanding and managing risk.  From “Managing Risks: A New Framework” by Mikes and Kaplan in HBR of June 2012 to “Managing the people side of risk” by Krivkovich and Levy from McKinsey in May 2013 and a recent airing on BBC Radio 4, attention is moving away from the processes of risk management towards a behavioural approach.

If your experience has been like mine, risk management has been the “Cinderella” of organisational leadership and management – denied a place at the top table, it is pushed down the organogram as a housekeeping task, using clunky tools and reported upon at intervals to a disengaged Board.  The only fun it gets is to play with traffic light colours and then everyone complains about the printer ink consumption.

Well, the good news is that risk management may finally have arrived.  Clearly to manage risks you must first identify them and then assess their probability and impact – nothing has changed there – but recent events do appear to have changed our understanding of what is going on and our views on certainty vs uncertainty.  Compliance systems have failed in a number of major organisations: “once in a hundred years” natural disasters now happen each year; volcanoes in the middle of nowhere disrupt world travel; and some risks we incur due to choice.  So, not all risks are the same yet many organisations still rely on a “one size fits all” approach.  Does that seem sensible to you?
