Generation Z…the Digital Generation

By Gill Dandy

There seems to have been a lot of buzz recently about Generation Z. But what do we mean by Generation Z, and why is Gen Z the ‘talk of the town’?

Generation Z

  • Born after 1995 - just going to university and college or just starting work.
  • Grown up with smartphones and tablets
  • Grown up with broadband and superfast broadband.
  • 90% of media interactions will be screen–based.
  • 94% of communications time is text based
  • Can’t imagine life without social media.
  • Not likely to spend more than 3% of time talking on the phone (we currently spend about 20% of our time communicating by phone)
  • Have an 8% attention span (according to researchers)

Generation Z is not just the digital generation; they’re the superFAST digital generation.

According to the Andora Svitak TED talk on what adults can learn from kids (that has now been seen by 3.8 million people), Generation Z are tomorrow’s future leaders.

There are reams of research on the behaviours, aspirations and expectations of this future workforce and its potential impact on our increasingly global markets.

According to Ofcom’s recent Communications market report, techie teens are shaping the way we communicate. Because they are growing up in this digital age, 12-15 year olds are developing fundamentally different communication habits to 16-24 years olds – who are considered to be an advanced age group.

Generation Z works very differently, thinks very differently and is very different to past and current workforces.
