Listen. Question. Learn: creating a coaching culture in the workplace

What are the hallmarks of high performing managers, teams and companies?

In my experience, these individuals or groups have two highly developed skills:

1) They know how to listen

This means that they are able to hear criticism, they recognise the dangers of selective listening (only hearing what they want to hear or fear to hear) and genuinely what to listen to what is being said to them. They seek to listen to understand as opposed to listen to justify.

2) They know how to question

It helps to have something to listen to. High performers question effectively. They question themselves, their colleagues, their clients. They ask questions which elicit information which contributes to growth, development and learning.

Here are some types of questions. Questioning is an art that improves with practice. Think about the best type of question to ask to elicit information you need.

Open ended: Questions which start with What? Where? How/ Who? Tell me about?

Probing / exploratory: Which particular?

Focusing: What does xx mean to you?

Hypothetical: What if?

Impact: What would the consequences be if you do/ don’t achieve this?

Ranking: Which options will give you the best/easiest/most challenging result

What guarantees high performance?

You need to learn from and act on what you hear.
