Got a New Year’s resolution? Try thinking more strategically

By Howard Exton-Smith

These days 'strategy' seems to be everywhere — we either have to produce a strategic plan or to think 'more strategically'. As managers, we are increasingly required to contribute to or write plans that embrace our strategy. But what does this mean in practice? And how do you plan effectively and efficiently when day-to-day operations are pressing?

Our approach to strategy will help you through the rhetoric by looking at a proven strategic planning process that balances the how with the what. It will provide you with practical tools to analyse your current situation and clarity to see options for the future.

As there is not much point in having a strategy if you don’t follow it and assess its success, we also look at implementation through action planning and communication techniques and provide an overview of monitoring and evaluation.

Successful strategy is about:

  • Setting yourself up for success by working with stakeholders and in teams
  • A focus on outcomes – what you are going to achieve rather than just do
  • Recognising the outside world – context is important
  • Seeing the 'bigger picture'
  • Challenging the status quo
  • Making choices – what will you not do?
  • Allocating appropriate resources to achieve your objectives

By building your skills and raising your confidence, our two-day Strategic planning and thinking course will help you improve your performance and make a more meaningful contribution to organisational success. Book now!
